Maybe you’re even one of them yourself…I think back to posts I have read over the years of happiness shared, the joy and satisfaction of overcoming personal challenges, anger vented, wallowing self-pity expressed following unexpected and unwanted broken relationships, or blow by blow details of the latest of life’s dramas….
While it is understandable why someone would be experiencing each of these emotions, is it really necessary to post it for the whole world to see, and does anyone really care? While probably many won’t care, beyond a cursory acknowledgement that you’re having a bad day, bad week or just going through a bad patch, there may be someone who is watching with interest, and knowing that they are looking might make you reconsider what and how much you post…
When considering whether or not to employ a person for any type of work, a business owner or authorised company representative is looking for information. In the past that information was obtained primarily through your resume, or by speaking to people who knew you. With unparalleled access to technology and the rise of social media platforms that encourage the capturing and sharing of images amongst friends and loved ones, employers now have access to much more information about the people wanting to work for them.
While the information that we put in our resumes is usually carefully controlled and crafted, if we are not careful, the content of our social media profiles can leave us somewhat exposed. The comments and images posted and who you are connected to say a lot. So let me ask…. have you ever seriously considered what your posts might unwittingly say about your judgment, your discretion, or your ability to make wise decisions? In addition to the language that you use, don’t forget that a picture is worth a thousand words.
